It all started so simple. My wife calls and says "Hey I spotted a neat old Volkswagen Squareback for sale. I think it'd be a great first car for our oldest daughter." So I went with her to go look it over. The more I looked, the more I liked it. We came home and talked to our daughter about it for a while. Once we determined that it didn't seem like a car she was really interested in I latched on. Yesterday afternoon we bought it and today they delivered it. It's a 1970 Volkswagen 1600 Type III. It's a solid old car with minimal rust. It's not running right now but that doesn't matter to me at all. The car is coming apart anyway. It'll be going through a fairly complete restoration in the coming months. I'll probably post a shot every once in a while to show the progress. This is going to be fun!
New baby??? Good thing you're doing here, about respecting our elders... I am a car designer by trade, a kind of pro ride pimper, love this kind of things! Will love seing your work.
ReplyDeleteOh, so fine! I am thrilled for you. Here’s one I found—it’s still there when the guy’s working, parking cars at a nearby restaurant!
ReplyDeleteMore than just familiar to me! That's "Friedrich", my grandfather's car when I was a kid. Except that the colour had been changed... I miss my Granddad.
ReplyDeleteA fortunate find! I do remember those. And it does look in pretty good shape. Good luck with the restoration. I envy you for being able to do that kind of thing and I'll be waiting pictures of the process!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great photo, too...got to embiggen it, though, to get the full effect!
Ooh, what a wonderful project! Looks like you're going to have another baby. :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks like it is in great shape! What a fun project. I will look forward to pictures of the progress!
ReplyDeletei agree, a great project indeed! i know it's not a concern up there, but does this come with a/c? you have to have a/c to live in texas, it's required =)
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be a fun project. Also, after doing some research this is probably one of the more affordable cars to restore. Many parts are available, and most of them are very reasonably priced.
ReplyDeleteLynette: I did see that prior post of yours. That's one more survivor.
cieldequimper: Granddad had pretty good taste.
Rob and Mandy: We're going to be restoring this baby to very near stock. I'd really like to maintain the integrity and originality on this one. It'll be a real creampuff.
Wow, Don, that looks great ... even if it doesn't run. I'll look forward to seeing your progress over the next few months. A brand new 1971 yellow squareback was my very first VW. Bought it in Spokane during a horrendous snowstorm so I could get to my home at the top of the south Monroe St. hill. That was the deal I made with the salesman ... if this will get me home, I'll buy it. And I did! Great cars!!
ReplyDeleteKids ..... go figure -:))
Very cool. I will be waiting for more photos.
ReplyDeleteOur first car as a couple was one very like it--but it was a sedan instead of the square back. They had not been marketed here, but this one had been brought over from Germany by a previous owner.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beauty!
