If you were standing where yesterday's photo was taken, turned around and walked to the other side of the overpass, this would be your view. Note the fish ladder on the left which was featured in a previous post here. See the walking trail on the right? You can walk from the bridge in yesterday's post down this way, then cross over at the lower falls and walk back up the other side.

Cider Sunday Part 3 - Here & Gone
Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Carrying on with our "Cider Sunday" series, part 3 moves away from the homesteaders and cider squeezers and on to the spawning salmon, and there were LOTS of them. Not only did they have two large tanks filled with salmon, but there were plenty working their way up the ladder toward the falls. Representatives from The Department of Fisheries were on hand educating the kids (and some of us adults) on fishy reproduction. We walked down just below the falls to see what was going on there. When we first saw the salmon pictured here he was thrashing around in the water wearing himself out. He slowed down and moved over to the calmer water to rest for about ten minutes or so. When he felt like he was ready up he came. These shots were taken about fifteen feet from the falls themselves. In order to clear them he would have to jump about eight to ten feet. We ended up leaving shortly after taking these photos so I'm not sure if he made it or not. More tomorrow.........

Tumwater Falls Revisited

Some of you may remember seeing this little tree growing out of the stone and concrete from a previous post here. My wife just loves this little tree growing and thriving in a less than ideal environment. Don't be surprised if it ends up on here from time to time. It's interesting to see it change from season to season toughing it out.

Recently I posted a photo of Tumwater Falls. Looking back in the archives I found this shot from the lower falls looking back up. Kind of the same view the salmon get each year when they return without all the work.

Sometimes you find color in the most unlikely of places. While on a walk at Tumwater Falls Park, we spotted this little maple showing it's colors against a backdrop of gray concrete.
