SkyWatch Friday - High Tide at Grayland

Friday, January 8, 2010

This photo was taken on January 1st 2010. Having no other plans for New Year's Day, and add to that the fact it was raining and windy as heck, my wife and I hopped in the truck and headed for the coast. Why not? The kids were at Grandma and Grandpa's so we can do anything we want! Besides whenever I really want to put a smile on my wife's face I offer to take her to one of her favorite places in the world to eat. Bennett's restaurant in Grayland, Washington which is just south of Westport. She thinks their clam chowder served in a sourdough breadbowl is the best she's tasted. That's good enough for me. Not being a seafood lover I opted for a hefty bacon cheeseburger and fries. For anyone even remotely close let me tell you it's definitely worth the drive. While we were there of course we took a short drive on the beach. They were experiencing a near record high tide so there really wasn't much beach to drive on. Our skywatch that day was wet and gray, but the good food more than made up for it.

Beach driftwood is simply amazing! I like chowder, by the way, so thanks for the tip! Grayland would make a nice day-ride.

No, I didn't even consider riding my scooter around the track -:)

Very nice! This is a great piece of driftwood, and you found a wonderful way to show it.

  3. Super shot specially when enlarged. bird and all.
The first time I went to Grayland was many years ago, I was just a little kid and my Dad had just died and my Mother and i went there just to get away. and that's about all i remember about it.

  4. Oh wow! I've yet to go to the ocean when in WA.
Clam chowder you say? Hmmmm... I had some in Gig Harbor, it was okay but just okay, so I guess that here's a new spot on my list of to-go places! Have a great weekend!

I'm can smell that chowder,a nd the salty ocean breeze.
I love your photo - the beach is awesome in b&w isn't it?
    Have a fantabulous weekend.

Where did that stump come from? I would hate to hit it with my boat. Beautiful sky and sea.

Well, you get two stars! One for the food which you so generously noted for your fellow Olympians, and the other for this great photograph. Stark, cool, dramatic, powerful.

    I love it.

We're coming along fine. Pretty much settled in. Penniless! And pooped!

And very cold! I've never seen anything like the weather we are having! It's absolutely freezing! Day after day. Ugh!

We know we'll go back to normal (which is 70 high and 50 low) but it's taking much too long!

Hope you have a great weekend with good food and fotos!

You sure got one fantastic photo out of that gray day! This is gorgeous, Don!

And I'm with Krise on the clam chowder in a sourdough breadbowl — two of my favorite foods and sounds absolutely heavenly together!

This is a very artistic shot. The waves look quite fierce and that tree root is something else! Sounds like you feasted on yummy comfort food, too. Nice way to spend the day! What an appropriate name, "Grayland," for the way the skies were that day!

Oh, I love this... I am missing my beloved coast while I am spending time in the midwest. No matter what time of year, it's always a wonderful experience to be there. I have found so much peace by myself on the beach. This is a beautiful shot, and I can feel that peace. This is a great b/w with a wonderful reflection - and love the solitary sea bird. This would also make a great entry to the monochrome weekly - not sure if you participate in that meme, but this would be perfect there!

  11. wet and gray--very atmospheric for a driftwood on beach photo! peaceful.
It's gray and cold and snowy where I live.

More of a tree stump than a sky watch, but a very fine photo,
