The Pole Position

Monday, May 17, 2010

This afternoon I went for a walk around the State Capitol. I spotted this tree and realized I had seen it many times, even photographed it before but I'd never shared it on here. I'm not sure of the history of this old tree. I looked for some sign or plaque, but there were none. I'm assuming there's something about this old tree that makes it worthy of saving. Check out the series of poles around it. Some have loops at the top with a branch running through them. At least one near the center stretches above the top of the tree and has cables which reach out and support other limbs. Quite the design.

What an amazing tree! It looks like a marionette puppet with the support poles! Very interesting design!

It shows a lot of respect for the age of the tree when the city steps in and takes care of it as they have this one. Your local newspaper or library should have the story about the tree.

  3. Interesting. And some good advice from Abraham, it would be nice to know the full story.

It's a grand old tree and definitely looks worth saving. The supports are quite tasteful too. I probably wouldn't have noticed them, thinking that they were lamp posts.

  5. Good that it's being supported. I hate old trees being damaged or worse, felled.

We all need additional support as we get on n age :)

  7. It is interesting and makes one wonder the significance of the tree. Which of course means thsat you will have to investigate some more. Please! MB

Interesting that they have gone to such extreme lengths to support the branches of that tree. The branches on old trees here usually are just left to touch the ground and they eventually just start growing back up again. This must be one important tree!

Intriguing. I'll bet it's as old as the proverbial "hills"! It might even be as old as I am...(I've been a member of AARP for ___ years!)

Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to prop this baby up and keep it alive.

    Pretty cool, baby!

It does look like it should have a historic marker. Poor old tree!

    Thanks everyone.

Next time we're there I'll have to see if I can find out more about this. I searched and searched on the internet but never did find anything.

  13. Wow. Very interesting. What an impressive tree. It's really worth to save it.
