Remember Whensday - Space Needle

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Back in high school my best friend John and I took the photography class they offered at our high school. We really had a blast. Most of what we shot at that time was black and white, which I really grew to love. The teacher would give us an assignment of what to shoot such as stop action, or textures, or whatever. It got to the point we carried our cameras just about everywhere. I saved up my money and bought my first 35 mm camera, a Yashica TL Electro X. It was a simple camera, but still delivered pretty good photos for the price. I believe I paid about $135.00 for it. One particular weekend my parents decided we were heading to Seattle for the day. John and I grabbed our cameras, a couple rolls of film and off we went. I have quite a few good shots from that day, but this one caught my eye as I was going through them. Why not? The Space Needle is a northwest landmark, and my contribution to Remember Whensday.

How lucky you were to be offered these lessons at school. Nothing like that in Scotland in my schooldays.
Looks as though they paid off! I like the angle.

Obviously, you had a good eye for photos right from the start.

Excellent. You did learn a couple of things in that high school photography class!

I knew that before this, of course.

I stayed in a motel not far from the Space Needle in 1980 when in Seattle for a convention.

My first camera was a Kodak Retinette which I bought at the Navy Exchange in Port Lyautey, Morocco for $28.

I took hundreds of pictures with that camera, most of which I still have.

Great times. Thanks for the memories.

It is fun going through these old photos from that time. None of them are great, but they're mine.

  10. Sally in WA: Thank you, but I'd rather be lucky than good any day. ;-)
