Dubs on the Dyno

Sunday, April 11, 2010

As I promised in yesterday's post, here's another shot from the Capital City Spring Fling, an all VW car show/swap meet held this past Saturday at the Thurston County Fairgrounds. One of the local performance shops brought a portable dyno. You could put your car on it and see what kind of horsepower you were stretching out of your engine. There were all kinds going for it from turbocharged to bone stock 36 horse busses. There were prizes for highest and lowest horsepowers too. This clean Karmann Ghia was just one of the cars that went for it.

Back in the 60's my parents vacationed and traveled through Germany in a VW Squareback. They liked the car so much, they bought one and had it shipped back to the States. I always hoped they'd give it to me when I earned my driver's license. Instead, I was awarded a lovely canary yellow Datsun 210 wagon complete with fake wood paneling, luggage rack and a fifth gear. How lucky was I?

  3. Beautiful shot and nice car!1

I haven't seen one of those cars in a long time!

When we lived in Phoenix in the early 60s, a good friend of mine had a Kharman Gia. I was sooooo jealous! It was beautiful.

Nice shot here, Don. I can imagine a VW lover like thyself could go kinda nuts at an event like this.

Re your comment on Ocala DP - I don't plant things anymore, but once in awhile I get potted! ;-)

    I don't think I understood anything from what I just read…

I've never owned a VW, but I have always wanted one. I really want a vintage convertible bug. I am always looking for them, and I price them out on Craigslist every now and again :) I can never seem to pull the trigger (they're EXPENSIVE)! But maybe someday... I know someone who has a Karmann Ghia convertible sitting in her garage that has been there for way too many years untouched and forgotten about. She won't part with it though. I've offered to take it off her hands :) Doesn't seem fair, does it!

  9. Thanks everyone! I think you're all closet Veedubbers.

gogouci: A Datsun with woodgrain? Man, you've got us all jealous now!

Jacob: It was a VW smorgasbord!

Hilda: There there Hilda, I don't blame anyone that doesn't fully understand things here. ;-)

Yolanda: What a waste. My wife and I were up north in Tacoma today. We passed a light blue Karmann Ghia sitting in the corner of a crummy used car lot. It said "Make Offer" on the windshield. I've got to say it was tempting, but we're holding out for a bus after we finish the restoration on the squareback.
