Flashback Fifty-Five for "Remember Whensday"

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

Well here I go again, sticking my neck out for the world to hack at. Besides the fact that I want to start scanning and posting some of my old photos on here, I've been wanting to post a photo that I could also contribute to Remember Whensday. This photo wasn't one that had a date one it but I would have to say it was taken in the spring or summer of 1974. I would have been 16 or 17 at the time. This photo was taken at Spanaway Park and I was proudly posing by my first car. A 1955 Chevy Belair two door hardtop. I got it when I was 14. My dad and I spent the next 2 or 3 years doing body and paint, interior, changing all the running gear, everything. Of course being a dumb kid, (I can say that) I got a wild hair after I turned 18 and had that title in my hands. I sold it for less than it was worth just to get the next car I wanted. (Banging head against desk right now.) Anyway I wanted to share this shot today. There'll be more to come in the near future.

If you get a chance hop on over to Remember Whensday and check it out by clicking below.

nice photo and memory! i turned 16 in 1985, and my first car was a 1964 thunderbird that my dad had completely re-done for me. new rebuilt engine, transmission, paint, everything... i kept it a year and sold it for a newer car - at the time rationalizing it was because it only got about 9 miles per gallon =) it was really nice though, and wish i had it today. i'll have to dig out some pics... =)

It's green, tell me it's green!!!! My first car, a 1955 4-door Chevrolet. I was in the 10th grade, so it must have been the summer of 1963 when my Daddy bought it for us to share. I drove it to school. He drove it hunting during quail season in Mississippi. He built a plywood box that he could slide in through the trunk after removing the back seat. He filled it with straw and hung a bathroom bowl deodorizer in it, then before he drove off in the early morning to go hunting, he opened the trunk and let his two hunting dogs jump in. You can imagine how ripe it got in there as the season progressed, right? Well to top it off, during junior high football season, I'd go over to my little brother's school to pick him up after practice. Well, not just him. I'd have as many as four guys climbing in the back doors, stretching out on the box, heads at the back of the front seat! It was a trip, honey, a trip. Thanks for your fantastic photo that brought back all of these great memories. I don't remember when or how it left our family, though I also wish I had it today.

Gee, you and Brian are so young!

  3. Fantastic image..The old car is looking so beautiful !!Unseen Rajasthan

    Cute kid, handsome car. :)
Love your belt. Your hair isn't as dorky as those of my brothers during this decade!

  6. Lois Says:

That is a great looking car and not a bad looking kid either!

One more thing we have in common. Our third car, bought in 1958 or 1959, was a 1955 Bel Air 2-door hardtop...two-tone blue and white.

Great car. We drove it from Minneapolis to Phoenix several times. Did have to replace a muffler somewhere on Route 66 in Oklahoma once.

Wish I had it now (Banging head against desk...)!

  8. brian, Lynette & Jacob: I'm glad if it stirred up some good memories. That's a good thing.

    Unseen: Thank you very much.

Small City: Dude huh? Yes I do wish I had that car, every day. :-(

Hilda: I strive to be less dorky these days. Oh, I made that belt in high school. Thanks for noticing.

Lois: Thank you. I appreciate that.

  9. ron Says:

whay kind of camera do you use?

  10. ron: I use a Nikon D40. This shot was taken back in the mid 70's with a old Kodak instamatic. (And it shows)

I think you look very cute in this picture Don! You remind me of all the teenage boys nowadays with the long hair. So how the styles come full circle. I would of loved to cruise with you in your car, alas it was still three more years yet for me to be born. When this photo was taken....lol xoxoxox :)

  12. Krise: Thank you honey. Had you been around then you would have been #1 on my list as you are now. ;-)
P.S. I'll try growing my hair out if you'd like. All except for that one spot.

  13. Nice to walk down memory lane sometimes.I think I saw a few old Chevys at the cruiser meet two weeks ago.

Looks like a Jan & Dean or Beach Boys album cover. You were quite the fashion plate back then.

I always love seeing that '70s hair and clothing, especially in movies. It always looks so dorky compared to - uh - the '60s, which always looks cool and normal to me :)
