Cider Sunday Part 3 - Here & Gone

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Carrying on with our "Cider Sunday" series, part 3 moves away from the homesteaders and cider squeezers and on to the spawning salmon, and there were LOTS of them. Not only did they have two large tanks filled with salmon, but there were plenty working their way up the ladder toward the falls. Representatives from The Department of Fisheries were on hand educating the kids (and some of us adults) on fishy reproduction. We walked down just below the falls to see what was going on there. When we first saw the salmon pictured here he was thrashing around in the water wearing himself out. He slowed down and moved over to the calmer water to rest for about ten minutes or so. When he felt like he was ready up he came. These shots were taken about fifteen feet from the falls themselves. In order to clear them he would have to jump about eight to ten feet. We ended up leaving shortly after taking these photos so I'm not sure if he made it or not. More tomorrow.........

  1. It's such a fight for these salmon to reach the spawning ground and we (humans) have to put obstacles in there way. Great pictures.

    Today Taylor Shellfish Farm. MB

Very nice photos. I agree with Small City Scenes. I am so glad the fish make the journey and i hope the water is pristine when they get to where they are going.

Great action shot, Don! These fish are amazing...and tasty!

  5. Lois Says:

Quite a determined fish! He must be pretty strong too. Those are wonderful shots.

  6. Small City Scenes: You aren't kidding it's a fight. By the time the fish reach the upper falls some of them are pretty beat up and worn out.

Abe: The water is very nice at this location and there is a fish ladder to help them reach their destination a little easier.

brian: I know, you sort of feel sorry for them.

Jacob: Maybe I could UPS one down to you. ;-)

Lois: They are as determined as any living thing could be. Some don't make it all the way.

  7. I'll have MB's crab for starters and your salmon for main course. ;-) It's great that you caught it jumping, let's hope it made it.

Those salmon do not have it easy! Must have been a wonder to watch them swim and jump upriver. I hope s/he made it!

I always wanted to get this shot!!

  10. ciel: If you were standing where we took this shot and looked over your left shoulder you'd see a wonderful restaraunt overlooking the falls. You could be eating crab and watching the salmon at the same time.

Hilda: You're right. I'm sure we'll be back each year to watch.

gogouci: Come on up! They're still running.
